With 14 available for today's match, there was a feeling of confidence in the squad as we assembled to take on the might of Cambridge University (CU).
Andy and Tom from our newest sponsor, Escape Peterborough, were in attendance today to formally launch their sponsorship of our Ladies first team. Obligatory photographs were the order of the day before we went to battle with CU. We thank Escape Peterborough for supporting us and value their friendship and support.
A fairly settled starting line up today, although with Emily on holiday, Megan P moved up front to partner Yaz, with Jenna and Megan S running central midfield and Georgina starting on the right wing. It was also the first time in Netherton colours for Emma Collett, another strong addition to the squad.
The first half to be fair was one of few chances, Alice went close when a speculative cross from the left looped up and came back off the post; was it going to be one of those days? With much of the play in midfield, both defences mopped up any attacking intent and neither side were able to break through.
Half Time 0-0
Steve and Andy made it clear to the ladies that we just needed to stick to our game and if we could find a breakthrough we would go on and bag the 3 points on offer today.
The second half continued in the pattern of the first half, attacks from both sides being dealt with by the defences, and with no quarter being given by either side, it was a bruising but fair battle.
It was really starting to look as if today would be a stalemate, until with just 12 minutes of normal time to go, Megan P fed her strike partner the ball on the edge of the ball, the ball sat up and Yaz sent the ball sailing towards the top right of the goal. As it neared the goal, it began to dip, enough to fall below the crossbar and well away from the CU keepers despairing dive. A wonderful strike, and I guess a tight battle like this one should be settled by a moment of magic.
Yaz was then sacrificed for Jenna to shore up midfield in a more defensive 4-5-1 formation, ready for what we felt would be an onslaught from CU. But as for all of the match, defences were able to clear away trouble with CU only really threatening once when a player was through and one on one with Katie, who saved well.
With a minute to go, we were able to get Emma on for debut but with so little time left in the game we were unable to get Natalie MG into the action.
Full Time 1-0
Always a tough tie with CU, Steve and Andy felt we had done enough to come away with the points in a very even game. Katie and her defence were as usual solid as a rock and work brilliantly together as a unit and were to have a second clean sheet in consecutive weeks. Good performances in midfield and attack with everyone working their socks off to make the win.
Another tough game next week as we visit Newmarket Town, but we look to be running into really good form at exactly the right time.
