Ladies go down to two late goals after leading 2-1
Bitter pill to swallow but we will bounce back
After a late in the day change of venue, we found ourselves visiting the Newmarket Sports Centre, so the chance to visit Newmarket's new ground was not to come off.
Great facilities but no need to warm up really as the ladies had a half mile walk to the pitch!
Very few changes since last week, with Emily Johnson coming back into the squad after her holidays. Megan Stickland was on Wembley duty and this left us with a squad of 13.
In truth the pitch was pretty poor, but the old adage that the pitch was poor for both sides holds true. A large downhill gradient from one side of the pitch to the other and goals that looked as if they had been welded together just before the match.
This wasn't to be our best game of the season by a long way.
It started positively though and after just 5 minutes Jenna Nairn had sent a ball up to Yasmin Green, she was able to flick the ball on with her head and Emily Johnson ran onto the ball, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net. What a great start. 1-0 Netherton.
It didn't take Newmarket long to respond, a ball in our penalty area was weakly cleared and fell to them just outside the box, their player hit the ball hard and true to Katie Cooper 's right and she was unable to get near it. 1-1.
The remainder of the first half turned into a mainly midfield battle, with few real chances but Alice MacNicol went close firing over the bar from a tight angle and Jenna Nairn hitting the bar from range.
In truth, not the greatest of games the halftime scoreline was fair reflection on the first 45 minutes.
Half Time 1-1
Much the same for large parts of the second half, both sides able to mop up attacks and both keepers cleaning up when they needed to.
We got our noses in front again on 76 minutes, just as we thought this would fizzle out into a draw.
Jenna Nairn fed the ball over the defence and it found the onrushing Georgina Parrett, she was first to the ball and deftly lobbed the home keeper from just inside the box for our second of the game. 2-1 Netherton.
As with last week, we immediately sacrificed a striker as Yasmin Green came off and Alice MacNicol back on to bolster the midfield.
With just nine minutes left, Newmarket found their equaliser, a cross found a Newmarket head and into the goal. 2-2.
The cruelest pill was to come though in injury time as we were unable to defend a set piece and the ball found our net. 3-2 Newmarket.
Full Time 3-2 Newmarket
A really disappointing result but we weren't on our best game today and were punished for it. With 6 league games to go, there is still plenty to play for and we need to come back fighting next week.
Congratulations to Newmarket on their victory.
